Lake Toba is among the primary destinations for tourist of North Sumatra. While I’t already written about some of the other highlights of Sumatra (such as Pulau Weh with it’s great diving, Tangkahan at which you may take a sea tour and Bukit Lawang where one can see Orang Utans) I thought I’d cover Things To Do At Lake Toba today

1. Kayak Around the Lake
Among the best things to do around Lake Toba is kayaking. Out on the lake, you’ll feel at one with nature. You can easily rent a Kayak and move paddle away on the crystal clear waters of the lake. You’ll be spoiled by the views of volcanic mountains touching the skies above. I’d recommend stopping for an old-style picnic by the lake, shared with a cherished one perhaps. It’s a reviving experience! Additionally, you might also go fishing on a traditional fisherman’s boat. Ask the locals about it.

2. Explore the Town of Tuktuk Siadong
Should you visit the island of Samosir your first stopping point is the town of Tuktuk Siadong. The ferry from Parapat stops here. The town is calm yet lively. There’s lots of accomodation, charming bars and restaurants. You may remain in a traditional Batak-style bungalow and simply wander around, meet the friendly locals and enjoy the views of the lake, before settling down to explore the island further.

3. Check Out Some Wonderful Waterfalls
Samosir Island is home to a spectacular waterfalls. The most striking is the 120-metre tall Sipiso-Piso Waterfall. The waterfall is on the the northern edge of Lake Toba. You can increase the waterfall to for an incredible view of the surrounding landscape (there’s a great guide to the falls here). Another wonderful waterfall to inspect is the Binangalom Waterfall, which cascades into the lake. It’s a great spot for a refreshing swim on a hot day and among the best things to do in Lake Toba.

4. Understand About Batak Culture
The region surrounding Lake Toba is populated with the Batak men and women. This cultural group have their own music, dance and food. Visiting Lake Toba is a possibility to find out about the culture. You may visit the Batak Museum, tucked in a traditional home where the king Raja Sidauruk was able to live before he passed away.

5. Lounge in a Hot Spring
Located in the foot of Pusuk Buhit you’ll discover some natural hot springs. It might be better to call them lsquo;very hot’ springs. Or maybe scalding springs… A few of the springs have been funnelled into little pools where one can soak in the seas and relax. They’re cheap and very basic, but an intriguing place to visit whether you can deal with the hot temperature of the water.
